How to successfully manage an ERP project

Implementing a new ERP solution should be an exciting time for any organisation. However, you'll probably hear the odd horror story about projects that end up on the scrap heap after being poorly managed. Because all businesses have different requirements and operate differently, there’s no secret formula to delivering an ERP project on time and within budget. But there is one thing that you need to get right: planning.

The importance of planning an ERP project correctly can not be overlooked. The projects that are often deemed the most successful have been appropriately planned. And it’s not rocket science either. If you’ve never experienced deploying or upgrading a solution before, you’ll need to do your research. Speak to somebody who has been there and done it and ask them for any advice or what they’d do differently.

Timing

Getting a new ERP Solution live takes time. Because of the complexity of these solutions, they often take several months to implement. That’s why it’s essential to plan in advance. Timing is everything. If you’ve got a go-live date in mind, then work backwards. Map out a timeline that coincides with any deadlines or compelling events.

Even the best-laid plans have some unexpected hiccups along the way. That’s why you should always factor in some contingency days along the way. That way, you’re more than likely to hit your go-live date – and, if everything goes to plan, you’ll be up and running before your planned schedule.

Responsibility

When you’ve selected your system and chosen an implementation partner, you’ll usually be allocated a project manager. They will help you roll out the critical project milestones, like blueprinting, training, scoping and go-live.

However, you’ll also need somebody internally managing the project from your side. It’s always advised to have an individual tasked with this responsibility. It’s so much easier when two people correspond and organise planned tasks and schedules.

Acceptance

Your ERP implementation project will only succeed if you have buy-in from across your organisation. Issues begin to crop up with people start pulling in opposite directions. Projects usually run to tight schedules, so make sure all your team are always available when tasks are scheduled. Even the slightest delay can end up impacting your go-live date.

Another thing that is often overlooked is the training of your team. If individuals don’t commit to learning how your solution works, there’s a good chance that the project will be deemed a failure despite all of the planning and execution. Get your team onside, and you’ll see user adoption soar and satisfaction levels.
