SEIDOR participates in the Zero Carbon project to reduce the carbon footprint of the food production and distribution sector

  • SEIDOR is a technology partner collaborating in the initiative launched by CBCat (Blockchain Center of Catalonia) and the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona to reduce the carbon footprint by means of blockchain technology.
  • The Zero Carbon project is a technological tool that helps advance in the fight against climate change from food production and distribution businesses.

SEIDOR, a technology services and solutions consultancy firm, is participating as a technological partner in the Zero Carbon project to reduce the carbon footprint of the food production and distribution sector of Catalonia by means of blockchain technology. The Zero Carbon project is an initiative launched by CBCat (Blockchain Center of Catalonia) and the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona.

At SEIDOR we are contributing with our experience and know-how to making the initiative launched by CBCat a reality. In this regard, Iván González, Marketing, Communication and Sustainability Director of the technology consultancy firm, pointed out that "companies are starting to incorporate sustainability as another component of its growth strategy, which, in the current stage, is mainly geared towards reducing or offseting the carbon footprint".

He added that "SEIDOR can provide its know-how on implementing sustainable technologies to organisations, which act as a driving force of a change linked to a new social and business reality, in which companies are called to take action and contribute to advancing towards a better world".

This initiative has been presented recently at the Town Hall of Vic, which is hosting the CBCat Food Node and from which the Zero Carbon project will be led. The CBCat Food Node is an entity launched in 2021 specialising in food production and distribution that promotes the adoption of blockchain technology in the sector.

Other companies associated with agri-food distribution and production in Catalonia that will participate in this initiative include Bonpreu, Noel and Leche Nostra. The UVic's BETA Technology Centre will also be participating by offering its experience and knowledge in measuring carbon.

Reducing the carbon footprint with blockchain technology

The Zero Carbon project was conceived with the aim of quantifying and certifying emissions in each stage of the food chain, from production to distribution.

Thanks to blockchain technology, which contributes to creating a unique standard for the different players in the system, both data security and transparency are guaranteed, providing absolute confidentiality and thus incentivising process optimisation. In this line, the use of Zero Knowledge Proof techniques allows quantifying the final emissions without revealing any details of the production process that generated them and provides a reliable and confidential system for all parties involved.

In the medium term, Zero Carbon will address the certification of zero emissions. It will do so by redeeming emitted carbon with carbon credits, which the producers and distributors may obtain by carrying out actions such as practising regenerative agriculture.

Furthermore, the project proposes a voluntary market for purchasing and selling these carbon credits, enabling companies that contribute to reducing carbon in the atmosphere to obtain a return on their investment.
